Within the Contact record, there are fields that control contact preferences. These are featured in the Further Information tab:

Within the Contact Methods section on the top left are the following fields:

By default on new record, these fields are set to Send.

Marketing Emails

This has no impact on emails in Mercury. It is simply there to note if a Contact has asked not to receive any marketing content, such as client brochures.

Sales Email (candidate) and Sales Email (client)

A sales email in Mercury is:

Emails with a Template which is marked as Sales Email
Emails sent from Mercury Search
Emails sent from the Email Editor where set to Multiple:

Multiple means sending an email to more than one Contact. It will send a separate email out to each Contact and removes any CC or Bcc options.

Depending on where an email is sent, determines whether the email setting is pre-set to Single or Multiple. When emailing from Mercury's internal search or from a Hotlist, it defaults to Multiple.

If a Contact is marked as Don't Send, the email will look as though it has sent but will not actually send, but it will appear in the Timeline with a status of Active and a Status Reason of Draft. It will also be listed in the users My Draft Emails View with a Did Not Send Reason of Recipient Marked as Do Not Send Bulk Email. This can be found within the Activities Menu > Emails:

If Sales Email is set to Don't Send, it will still allow single emails to be sent to the Contact.

Email

Email means single emails.

If Email is set to Don't Send, when a user goes to send an email from the Email Editor, the email address does not appear in the To field. All emails are prevented from being sent.

Automations

There are two triggers that will results in Sales Email (Candidate) being set to Don't Send.

1.  When a candidate is in a Placement. If the placement is Deactivated, the status will change back to Send. NOTE: We can build a workflow to prevent this from happening, if required. Please speak to your CSM.

2. When the Contact has an Off Limit set on their record.
